What is the Society for Living Structure?
We are a collection of individuals exploring and advocating new ways to think about our buildings, neighborhoods, towns, and cities. We hold the built environment to be among the greatest of collective human endeavors, an endeavor that is the shared inheritance of the efforts of innumerable individuals in innumerable cultures across eons of time.
We explore and support new approaches that satisfy the need for practical functionality, that contribute to environmental healing, that foster healthy lifestyles and encourage positive social interactions and that recognize the psychological and spiritual benefits of exposure to and immersion in beauty.
We favor time-tested and evidence-based solutions over arbitrary designers’ whims and academic “isms”.
We acknowledge that we are living in a unique time in which the confluence of environmental problems, social challenges and new scientific frameworks and technologies present us with new opportunities to re-conceptualize our approaches to designing and constructing how we live, work and play.
More specifically, we aim to incorporate recent findings in a wide range of disciplines including complexity theory, quantum physics and environmental psychology into how we conceive of and construct the world we inhabit. There have been a number of recent paradigm-shifting discoveries in these fields. Some have begun to have seismic repercussions in our understanding of how the world works and in the nature of reality itself, yet we continue to build according to the assumptions of outdated principles and outmoded processes that no longer best serve societal purposes. We aim to begin the process of changing this.
